Read full description of the books:
A splendid summary on a little known body of literature in the West that could benefit from some more exposure, as told by one of the best exemplars of said literature, the late Czeslaw Milosz. Because he was a poet, those looking to learn about Polish poetry in particular will find no major stone unturned here, nor will one find unnecessary elaborations on poetics, just the beefy essentials. But at the same time, the attention Milosz gives to Polish theatre is as commendable as his attention to his premier craft. Because Polish literature is more reactive to the history of its people than, say, American literature, this is as much a general history book as it is a book on literature, knocking off two birds with one stone. Milosz is good at connecting the currents from one time to another, giving his take on this history a welcome fluidity that should be a trademark to any history of literature. It goes up to the mid-60's, expanded to the mid-80's with an Epilogue; so anybody wanting to know about Poles writing today won't find what they're looking for in here. And since Milosz is naturally disinclined to write too much about his own role in the history of Polish literature, there is that to be wary about for those wanting to know more about Milosz specifically. But for everything before the mid-80's, this is a good reference to have around and it's been a great help for my own uses in contextualizing so many Polish writers that I've heard about.

Read information about the authorCzesław Miłosz memorialised his Lithuanian childhood in a 1955 novel, The Issa Valley , and in the 1959 memoir Native Realm . After graduating from Sigismund Augustus Gymnasium in Vilnius, he studied law at Stefan Batory University and in 1931 he travelled to Paris, where he was influenced by his distant cousin Oscar Milosz, a French poet of Lithuanian descent and a Swedenborgian. His first volume of poetry was published in 1934.
After receiving his law degree that year, he again spent a year in Paris on a fellowship. Upon returning, he worked as a commentator at Radio Wilno, but was dismissed, an action described as stemming from either his leftist views or for views overly sympathetic to Lithuania. Miłosz wrote all his poetry, fiction and essays in Polish and translated the Old Testament Psalms into Polish.
Awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in Literature for being an author "who with uncompromising clear-sightedness voices man's exposed condition in a world of severe conflicts."
